After graduating with having a Bachelor of Music (Boston University, 1963) and having a look at the liberal arts as a professor (Brown University, 1971-75), i am now a strong believer of an integrated approach to learning which includes studying music alongside the study of other disciplines. There is no reason to be surprised that an ethnomusicologist who has a PhD as well as an MA from UCLA is interested in the arts. It is not surprising that the department of ethnomusicology at UC Berkeley, where I was a professor from 1975-1976 sits in a College of Letters and Sciences' Department of Music. It is possible to pursue many areas of interest is something that I truly appreciate. I love teaching both undergraduates (majors as well as non-majors and for which I've composed three books - Music in India Music in India: Classical Traditions, Thinking Musically, and Music in Japan: Experiencing Music, Expressing Culture) as well as graduate students. Also, I rotate periods during which I engage in mainly academic pursuits and periods where I include administrative duties to my schedule (Chair of the Department of Music 1983-88, Dean of Undergraduate Advising 1992-98; Chair of the Deans in the College of Letters and Science 1994-98, Chair of the Group on Asian Studies in 1999 and currently Chair of the Department of Music again).
